Nanaimo rural firefighters battle early-morning blaze in Cranberry area

NANAIMO – Rural firefighters responded to a blaze in the Cranberry area near Nanaimo this morning.

Rural firefighters responded to a blaze in the Cranberry area south of Nanaimo this morning.

Tony Marcotte, North Oyster volunteer department deputy fire chief, said his crew offered assistance at a house fire on Waring Road, off of Morden Road.

The North Oyster hall received the call at about 5:30 a.m. and Marcotte said the house was destroyed.

“When we left scene, we left it with Cranberry [fire department],” said Marcotte. “It was out but … they were still looking at some hotspots. There’s a half-basement, and a lot of the structure collapsed on top of it, so there was a fire burning down in there as well.”

It’s too early to determine what the cause is, Marcotte said.
