A Nanaimo woman and a few friends will be showing their love and support for the people of Humboldt, Sask., on and, in this case, off the ice.
Angela Eaves, Steve Blunt and Bayley Russell have arranged a street hockey tournament and fundraiser in honour of what the members of the Humboldt Broncos most loved to do.
“I think, myself, that every community was deeply and greatly affected by that tragedy,” said Eaves, event organizer.
Eaves went on to say parents across the country could relate to the loss of young lives in the crash.
“It just struck a chord with me and, just looking at the support from across Canada, it was all Canada,” she said. “We are going to do this to raise funds, with 100 per cent of all the funds going toward Humboldt, but my greatest goal is, I want to bring the community together and I want us to honour the Humboldt Broncos by doing what they did, which was play hockey.”
The Humboldt Strong Street Hockey Fundraiser tournament happens at Nanaimo North Town Centre in the former Sears parking lot Sunday, April 22, starting at 10 a.m.
People can participate in teams of five. Minimum suggested donation is $50 per team or $10 per person.
Eaves said as of Friday, April 13, 16 teams had already signed up for the tournament.
