Nanaimo’s defences are in place outside the historical Bastion.
The first cannon firing of the season happened Monday and cannon firings will continue through the summer at Front Street and Bastion Street.
The historical trade fort is an extension of the nearby Nanaimo Museum, with exhibits inside, and is open seven days a week from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. through till Labour Day. The cannon firings will happen at noon daily.
Our sponsors make it possible to open the Bastion and fire the cannon all summer,” said Sophia Maher, general manager of the Nanaimo Museum, in a press release. “We appreciate the support they have given us for many years to share Nanaimo’s heritage with the community and tourists.”
The Bastion’s exhibits include artifacts and historical photos, and there is a tourism kiosk on the main floor.
