Nanaimo isn’t able to celebrate all the usual Christmas traditions, but residents could sure celebrate with light displays, and Nanaimo seems brighter than ever this season.
“If the brightness of Nanaimo’s holiday displays are any measure, COVID has not dimmed our community’s spirits this season,” noted an e-mail from the Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce. “It seems that more homes are lit even just a little bit, and many have gone way over the top to reflect their intense spirit this year.”
The Newcastle Neighbourhood Association organized an Illuminight contest in that part of town, and 557 Stewart Ave. was the winner in the ‘Radiant Residence’ category. The Marine Vista condos at 225 Rosehill St. won Illuminight’s Brilliant Building category with “a resounding enthusiastic and unanimous yes,” say judges, who added that the “level of participation, creativity, warmth and sharing was astounding and unmatched.”

Newcastle challenged other neighbourhoods to light up, too, and “whole neighbourhoods are coming together in brilliance,” the chamber said.
The chamber of commerce presented some recommended addresses and streets “where it seems the spirit is contagious” and reminded people to view light displays safely and physically distanced.
