Nanaimo’s first baby born in the new decade is a boy.
Kari Oxler and her fiancé Graydon Aguiar rang in the new year with the birth of their first child, a baby boy named Nasch Oxler Aguiar.
Nasch was born at 3:56 a.m. on Jan. 1 at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, weighing seven pounds, 11 ounces.
The Lantzville couple named their son after his grandfather.
Vancouver Island Health Authority confirmed that Nasch is the hospital’s first baby born in 2020.
Oxler told the News Bulletin that Nasch’s birth was somewhat unexpected because he wasn’t due until Jan 7.
“When we went to the hospital just to get checked out we were surprised that we had to stay,” Oxler said. “Then we thought ‘OK we have to make it to 2020’ but not even realizing that having the first baby of the new year could be a possibility, so it was kind of cool.”
But it became a reality a few hours after midnight when Nasch was born.
“It has been neat to have the first baby of the new year,” Oxler said. “Everyone has been excited for us and it will be cool to save all the news articles and have that for him when he is older.”
Nasch, mom and dad are back at home now, where they’re doing just fine.
“We just arrived home and he’s all rainbows,” Oxler said. “It’s been a really smooth experience.”
