There will be a municipal by-election in Nelson on March 27 to replace Nelson councillor Brittny Anderson, who was recently elected to the provincial government as the MLA for Nelson-Creston.
Anderson resigned from council on Dec. 14. At its Jan. 12 meeting, council will appoint a Chief Election Officer, who will set the by-election in motion.
Nomination packages will be available online or by pick-up at city hall starting Jan. 12.
At a council meeting following the provincial election, Mayor John Dooley paid tribute to Anderson.
“We have gotten to know you over the past couple of years and we know you will bring a lot of passion to the table and will work hard for your community,” Dooley said. “We’re so proud of you and look forward to working with you in the future. Just don’t forget us when you get to the big city. We’ll be recording every word you say.”
The last municipal by-election in Nelson was held in 1998, won by Donna Macdonald to replace councillor John Neville who moved out of the area.
In 1995, Gary Exner was elected mayor in a by-election after Bill Ramsden resigned. And in 1994, Doug Jay won a by-election to replace Stan Grill, a councillor who died that year.
