Nelson council decided at a recent meeting to upgrade two parks and one green space in the city.
The work will be done in partnership with three non-profit organizations.
The city will spend $20,000 to help Rotary Club of Nelson Daybreak to upgrade the multi-generational aspects of Art Gibbon Park in Rosemont.
“Increasing accessibility for everyone is a main feature of Rotary’s work with the city in this park,” says Margaret (Meg) Milner of Rotary. “That’s a real focus for us, to help the elders to be with the youngsters, and everyone in between.”
Milner said the money will fund paved walkways, picnic tables, benches, and a shade shelter, all wheelchair accessible.
The city will also spend $12,500 on an upgrade to Queen Elizabeth Park.
According to Jim Sevigny of the Nelson Baseball Association, the money will be spent on lighting repairs, a new watering station, and a new scoreboard with a large Queen Elizabeth Park sign.
The association has raised $375,000 over the past few years to provide new baseball infrastructure to the park: safety netting, renovated bathrooms, new dugouts, new fencing, new diamonds, and a new batting and pitching complex.
The third city contribution is $7,500 toward a small green space at 805 Nelson Ave., in front of Nelson CARES’ new Lakeside Place building.
