The City of Nelson will hold a public open house on March 5 to present its draft plans for bike routes in Nelson and get public input.
The first proposed route would run from the Orange Bridge south along Third Street and then down High Street to downtown.
According to materials considered by council at its Monday meeting, this route would “provide a safe, comfortable and connected bike route that would link all the neighbourhoods together, provide access to key amenities and converge in the downtown.”
Proposed changes to Third Street would include traffic calming, curb extensions, signage, pavement markings and improved sidewalks.
On High Street, council is considering installing a bi-directional protected bike lane with one-way vehicle traffic and reduced speed limits.
According to Councillor Janice Morrison, the bike routes are intended not just for experienced cyclists but for families and people who might not otherwise cycle.
“In terms of safety for drivers and pedestrians and cyclists,” she said, “I think that if we were to go through with this plan for High Street I believe this change would be the best option.”
There would also be changes to traffic flow through the intersection at Nelson Avenue and Anderson Street.
“Looking at things we do in the city thorough a climate change lens, we need to look at offering members of our community alternate transportation modes,” Morrison said.
The open house will be held at the Hume School gym on March 5 from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m.
