Le Bon Pain, Fernie’s newest French bakery, officially opened its doors on Jan. 11.
The shop is operated by Normandy-native and longtime baker, Bertrand Deschamps, alongside Lisa-Marie Hallien and Gautier Darandovas, who boast a collective 21 years of dough-kneading experience.
“When I arrived three years ago, we thought we need a bakery in Fernie,” said Deschamps, who kept an eye out for the perfect location, jumping on the opportunity when the downtown space opened up.
Currently baking buttery croissants and pain au chocolat, Le Bon Pain also serves a variety of freshly-baked breads including baguettes, walnut breads, sesame breads, potato breads, and more.
“We expect to add a lot of different bread and pastry products in the coming weeks,” said Deschamps, adding that they welcome the community’s feedback while they continue to adjust.
“We feel very well – a lot of people came this morning, so we are really happy and now we want to have the feedback to know if it’s a good product.”
Wafting scents of warm bread around Fernie’s downtown, Le Bon Pain is located at 792 Third Avenue, with the entrance on Eighth Street behind Barkside Pets.
Still solidifying their hours of operation, Le Bon Pain is currently open Friday to Wednesday, from 8 a.m. until items sell out – which according to Deschamps happened within the first few hours of opening on Monday.
