A dozen trees on First Avenue will be shining brighter this holiday season.
Mission Downtown Business Association purchased new lights for the trees earlier this year, but didn’t have the budget to install them, said the district’s operations manager, Matt Dunham.
District of Mission’s public works crew volunteered to hang them up this past weekend when Dunham explained there wasn’t funding in the district’s budget for the work either.
The unionized staff members didn’t hesitate to offer their help, said Dunham.
Workers spent 14 hours stringing the lights on 12 trees on First Avenue between Horne and Grand Streets.
“The lights will not be turned on until after Remembrance Day in respect of the occasion, but will be illuminated for the upcoming Downtown Mission Customer Appreciation event,” said Dunham. “I am extremely proud of staff’s willingness to give this time of themselves to the community and I want to extend my gratitude to them.”
Mission’s traditional snowflake lights will be put up just prior to the Candlelight Parade on Dec. 5.
According to the DBA, many merchants brought the crew food and drinks to thank them for their work.
“Even in a town as generous as ours, this kind of selflessness shines brightly and the Downtown Business Association appreciates these workers,” states the organization.
