The intersection of the old Island Highway and Bowen Road was the site of the most crashes in Nanaimo last year.
ICBC recently released expanded crash data for 2015-2019.

3. Nanaimo Parkway, Jingle Pot Road and Mostar Road – 46
4. Old Island Highway, Aulds Road and Hammond Bay Road – 44
5. Old Island Highway at Enterprise Way – 41
6. Nanaimo Parkway at Aulds Road – 39
7. Trans-Canada Highway, Nanaimo Parkway and Cedar Road – 37
8. Nanaimo Parkway, Jingle Pot Road and Third Street – 34
9. Bowen Road at Dufferin Crescent – 33
10. Old Island Highway at Norwell Drive and Jingle Pot Road – 32

The intersection of the old Island Highway, Northfield Road and Boundary Avenue was reconstructed in 2018:
2015 – 47 crashes, 3rd-most in the city
2016 – 62 crashes, 2nd
2017 – 50 crashes, 4th
2018 – 26 crashes, 16th

Lantzville’s highest-crash intersection was the Island Highway and Superior Road, with 17 crashes in 2019. Next on the list was the Island Highway at Ware Road, with 12 crashes. In Nanoose Bay, there were 22 crashes at the intersection of the Island Highway and Northwest Bay Road in 2019. On Gabriola Island, the intersection with the most crashes was North Road at Lockinvar Lane, with three.

The data includes information about whether the crashes resulted in injury or death. Data is not provided for crashes that happened in parking lots or crashes involving parked cars.
ICBC said in a press release that the new data is part of the insurance corporation’s commitment to transparency.
“Making sure the public is well-informed and supported is a priority,” said Nicolas Jimenez, ICBC’s president and CEO, in the release. “We’ll continue to expand the data available on icbc.com to better support customers, researchers, media and stakeholders.”
