Artist renderings have been released of what the people of Surrey can expect to see when the Surrey Museum expansion is completed.
A new modern structure, designed by HCMA Architecture + Design, will be added along 56A Avenue with a glazed link connecting the existing facility. The drawings also hint at the new concept and branding the museum will re-open with. According to museum manager Lynn Saffery, the new museum is all about connection, engagement, wonder and community partnerships.
“We are a museum that reflects the identity of Surrey, connecting people and communities to the stories of who we are and aspire to be,” Saffery said. “We will be a people museum with a focus on Surrey’s families and diverse cultural communities. The expanded museum will be a hub of activity, whether it be to stop in for a coffee and meet with friends or to attend special events and celebrations or to enjoy spaces like the expanded Kids Explore Zone, interactive exhibitions, Indigenous Hall and the Textile Studio.
“It won’t be your typical quiet, see-it-once museum.”
The new museum will include innovative temporary exhibitions so visitors can see new content at each visit. Traveling exhibits will be showcased, as well as exhibits comprised of the museum’s own collection and those curated by members and organizations from the community.
Construction is set to begin in June with a target completion date of September 2018.
