Mountain bikers in the area will be excited to hear that the Sufferfest Society is having a new trail constructed at Box Lake.
This new trail, which will be about three and a half kilometres, is an up track, meaning the intended use is for riding up the mountain, not coming down.
This trail will mean riders will no longer have to use the highway in order to access the trail system at Box Lake, but will instead be able to bike straight to it.
In addition to giving mountain bikers access to another trail, the Sufferfest Society is hoping to bring more events to the area.
“We’re looking at holding what’s called a mountain bike enduro race in the spring,” said Janis Neufeld of the Sufferfest Society. “We’re trying for April of 2017 to hold an enduro race in conjunction with the Nakusp and Area Bike Society.”
In an enduro race, there are a number of stages that are either timed or have time limits. The winner is whoever has the lowest combined time from the various timed sections.
The trail will not only be accessible for mountain bikers. Walkers and hikers are also encouraged to use it. Because it’s an up trail, there is no worry of bikes flying down, and riders on the trail won’t be going very fast.
For Neufeld, one exciting part is having the chance to work with Work BC in employing a challenged adult.
“He’s out having so much fun, and he’s doing a great job, and he’s such a hard worker,” she said. “I keep hearing from his supervisors that he’s a really good worker.”
The three-week project is expected to be completed mid to late October.
