A new gathering place for Nelson’s homeless population has been granted $278,016 from the provincial government.
The Co-ordinated Access Hub, which opened in June in the former Nelson CARES office at 521 Vernon St., is a federally funded program that provides low-barrier access to services such as harm reduction, housing and employment assistance.
The funds, which will be received by the City of Nelson, are part of $76 million in funds from the provincial Strengthening Communities Program directed toward homelessness initiatives in 48 communities.
“The people of Nelson have long worked together to support those in need in our community,” said Nelson-Creston MLA Brittny Anderson in a statement Thursday.
“I’m pleased to see this work evolving into the Co-ordinated Access Hub, connecting people with the services they need and making Nelson a more welcoming place to live.”
