New waste system rolling out across Hope Feb. 10

Bins began arriving at homes around Hope this week

Changes are coming — again — to how waste is collected in Hope, and the new system is about to roll out.

New carts began arriving at residential curbsides on Tuesday (Jan. 21), focusing on the Silver Creek area first. The District of Hope says residents are welcome to begin using the new carts right away, even though the new waste sorting bylaw won’t technically go into effect until April 1.

Residents should expect a 65-gallon cart for garbage, a 65-gallon cart for recycling, a 65-gallon cart for organics and green waste, and a small container for glass items. The large carts are wheeled, and have locking mechanisms on the attached lids.

The District is expecting delivery to all of the collection zones around Hope to take about two weeks, and they will be delivered in “streams” according to their Facebook page. So, neighbourhoods will all get one type of container in one delivery, before the next type is delivered.

It’s important to note that the containers are the property of Valley Waste and Recycling, and are coded to match the household to which they are assigned. If a resident moves, they stay with the house.

The new waste sorting bylaw is through the Fraser Valley Regional District, and applies to all owners or occupiers of residential, commercial, industrial and institutional properties in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Harrison Hot Springs, Hope, Kent, Mission and Electoral Areas A – H.

To comply with this bylaw, residents of Hope must sort all recyclable and compostable material out of the garbage before it leaves their property.

Waste collection days will remain the same under the new system. But, what goes to the curb will alternate.

The District will be providing a more detailed calender before the new schedule officially begins on Feb. 10.
