City council took the next steps this week toward green-lighting the new modular housing project proposed to house the homeless at the old Traders Inn site on Yale Road.
First and second reading were given to the bylaw to rezone property at 45944 Yale Road from a CS2 (Tourist Commercial) Zone to an R9 (Supportive Housing and Health Contact Centre) Zone.
Once approved, and built, tenants will have to pay rent and will have access to services, once they’ve met eligibility requirements.
Criteria will focus on low-income adults who live in the community with a history of homelessness, or those at-risk of it, who need additional support services to stay housed.
Eventually they’ll get tenancy application help and daily meal services. Staff will be on-site 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to ensure tenants are safe, can get some assistance and the property is well maintained.
Tenants will share a communal kitchen, dining space, and medical rooms, but have private rooms.
A community open house event to discuss the supportive housing proposal is set for Tuesday, May 8 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Neighbourhood Learning Centre inside Chilliwack secondary. Reps ranging from the operator RainCity Housing, to partners BC Housing, and Fraser Health will be on-hand to answer questions.
The city’s public hearing on the proposed rezoning for the supportive housing project will be held at city hall on May 15 at 7 p.m.
