NISS considers new date for grad

NISS is to hold a meeting to discuss the merits of rescheduling future graduation ceremonies

North Island Secondary School will host a meeting Tuesday for parents, teachers and future graduates to discuss the future of NISS graduation ceremonies.

The school is considering moving its leaving ceremony to the second Saturday in June, the same day currently used for Port Hardy Secondary’s graduation.

NISS officials noted there have been difficulties with its ceremony the first Saturday in June, most notably the conflicting schedule of the Provincial Soccer Championships that many grads participate in. Now teachers and parents are considering holding the ceremonies on the same weekend as PHSS.

“We had a separate bridge built last year for that reason,” Principal Lauren Deadman said, as the high schools had previously shared one bridge that travelled back and forth from Port McNeill and Port Hardy.

As Deadman pointed out, Port Hardy Secondary School hosts its first graduation ceremony in the morning, with dignitaries and scholarship presentations, while North Island Secondary School holds one in the evening. Those who wish to attend both would be able to.

Port Hardy holds a second, evening ceremony for students prior to their dry grad party.

Administrators from PHSS had no comments on the proposal, but plan to attend the June 12 meeting, which will take place at NISS at 7 p.m.
