There will be no byelection to fill the Oak Bay council seat left vacant by the death of Alan Cassidy.
The Local Government Act allows councils to forego a byelection if a vacancy occurs after July 1 in the year of a general election.
Given the timeline that would have to be met in order to hold such a vote, and its subsequent proximity to the civic election slated for Nov. 19, council determined Monday that a separate vote is unnecessary.
Instead, council will continue on with six members, including Mayor Christopher Causton.
Cassidy died on July 10 after a two-year battle with cancer. He had served on council since 1996.
