They say there’s no such thing as a free lunch, but Victoria city council benefits from catered lunches during meetings that run over the lunch hour.
That practice will come to an end.
Council approved a proposal by Coun. Marianne Alto to eliminate catering at council meetings, governance and priorities meetings and standing committee meetings.
“I think it’s a really important message to demonstrate, that city council understands everybody is looking for every dollar they can save and we need to do that too,” Alto said. “Most people who have jobs pack their lunch. This is the first job I’ve ever had where someone fed me and I don’t need that to happen.”
The change will save the city approximately $12,000.
Councillors Ben Isitt and Pam Madoff voted against the motion.
