The city will not conduct a recount of Saturday night’s municipal election ballots.

With the race for mayor coming down to a 39 vote difference, rumours started to fly that there would be a recount. Walter Jakeway, mayor-elect, said during an interview with CBC on Monday morning, he was told by the reporter that there would be a recount. But Peter Wipper, chief election officer, said there would be no recount.

“I would like to clarify that the City of Campbell River will not be conducting an informal recount, however, any candidate could apply to the Provincial Court for a judicial recount,” Wipper said.

Roy Grant, who finished second in the race for mayor, will not request a recount.

“I’m not too interested in asking for a recount, I have a lot of faith in the city staff who look after the election process,” Grant said. “I think with all the election technology we’ve got now it’s pretty accurate.”
