Nomination papers available for mayor, council, trustee

Municipal election Nov. 19

For anyone with local political leadership aspirations, nomination packages are available at Esquimalt Municipal Hall and Victoria City Hall.

Candidates for the Nov. 19 municipal election can retrieve their papers at either municipal hall during normal business hours, or in Victoria, can download them from the city’s website.

The requirements to run are now more onerous for those seeking a council position in Victoria. The city requires 25 nominators up from two, and a $25 deposit. Nominators must be registered electors in the jurisdiction.

In Esquimalt there is no deposit fee and only two nominees are required.

For those wishing to join the school board as a trustee, nomination forms are available at the School District of Greater Victoria office, 556 Boleskine Rd., or by calling 250-472-0059.

Candidates for any of these positions have a 10-day window to file their nomination papers and officially declare their candidacy, between Oct. 4 and Oct. 14.

Qualifications to hold office as a member of local government include: 18 years of age or older on voting day; a Canadian citizen; a resident of B.C. for at least six months immediately before the day nomination papers are filed; not disqualified by any enactment from voting in an election or otherwise disqualified by law.
