Nordic ski season begins in North Okanagan

Silver Star opens cross-country trails Friday but Sovereign Lake is delayed

Cross-country skiers are preparing to hit the trail.

Silver Star Mountain Resort opens its cross-country trails for the 2014-15 winter season Friday.

“Skiers will be able to enjoy about eight kilometres of cross-country trails with early season conditions located primarily on the higher reaches of the mountain,” said Guy Paulsen, Silver Star’s nordic manager.

“Access to the upper trails will be restricted to foot traffic only on defined and marked pathways from Silver Star’s village.”

Despite a week of hard work to prepare trails for the weekend, Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre is unable to open Friday.

“It was a tough decision but Sovereign Lake will open as soon as possible once they receive sufficient snow,” said Paulsen.

For the 2014-15 season, Silver Star will unveil its new warming cabin, Captik Cabin, along with an additional 2.5-kilometre loop named “After Me After You.”

Sovereign Lake will host the Sovereign Lake Open Dec. 6 to 7 and is anticipating a strong field of racers from Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest.

Silver Star and Sovereign Lake will be co-hosting the annual XC Supercamp from Nov. 21 to Dec. 7.
