The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.
The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:
• April 28, 3:49 p.m., 11800-block 74B Ave.: Complainant reported his neighbour’s van had a rear window smashed out. Police attended and spoke with the registered owner, who advised his Graco paint sprayer worth $1,600 was stolen.
• April 28, 5:00 p.m., 7600-block 114th St.: Police were approached by a complainant reporting that overnight someone had gone through his 2004 Toyota Corolla and stolen an external tool battery valued at approximately $100. No signs of forced entry because complainant had left the doors open by mistake.
• April 29, 8:21 a.m., 11800-block 71A Ave.: Complainant reported his grey 1996 Acura was stolen while parked overnight in front of his residence. Vehicle was secured and all keys were accounted for. Vehicle has since been recovered.
• April 29, 4:24 p.m., 11800-block 74th Ave.: Delta police received a report of theft of a child’s bicycle. The bicycle was stolen from the carport of their residence.
• April 30, 10:10 a.m., 9000-block River Rd.: Complainant called to report a trailer had been stolen. It was determined the trailer went missing sometime overnight between March 27 and 28.
• April 30, 2:29 p.m., 8100-block 120th St.: A loss prevention officer reported he had two females in custody for theft after he observed them selecting merchandise and leaving the store without payment. Approximate value of merchandise was $1,173.
• April 30, 9:27 p.m., 112th Street and 90th Avenue: Complainant reported a possible impaired driver and followed the vehicle. Police advised the complainant to stop following to avoid a possible confrontation. Police attended the residence where the vehicle was parked and learned that the registered owner was giving his teen driving lessons and an “L” sign was attached to the rear of the vehicle. No signs of intoxication.
• May 1, 12:59 p.m., 10100-block Nordel Crt.: Employee reported a late return/theft of auto from their business. Their policy is the vehicle is not reported stolen until a month after vehicle is due back. All numbers for subject of complaint are inactive and emails are unanswered.
• May 1, 7:55 p.m., 7700-block 117A St.: Complainant called Delta police to report he was a victim of a phone scam and lost $2,000. He received a phone call from an alleged immigration representative, advising he had a warrant for his arrest and needed to pay money. The complainant then received a call about 10 minutes after from a male stating he was with the Delta Police Department advising him the same. The victim purchased $2,000 in Google Play cards and provided the serial numbers to the caller. All Delta residents are cautioned that phone numbers, including that of the police, can be spoofed to make it seem like someone is calling from the police or another organization. Additionally, Canadian police officers will not call and ask for money to prevent anyone from being arrested. And neither the police nor the government will ask to be paid with any type of gift cards.
• May 2, 6:57 p.m., 11900-block 88th Ave.: Complainant reported his wallet was stolen while shopping. Wallet contained several credit/debit cards and $400 cash. All cards have been cancelled.
• May 3, 10:23 a.m., Nordel Way and 84th Avenue: A Delta police officer, while conducting laser enforcement, observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed, estimated at 100 km/hr. Laser confirmed the speed to be 105 km/hr. The driver was charged with excessive speed and given a notice of seven-day vehicle impound and a copy of notice of prohibition from driving a motor vehicle. Further inspection revealed the front tires were worn well below wear bars (almost no tread left) and were thus very unsafe. The vehicle was towed and the driver left the scene in a taxi.
• May 3, 12:22 p.m., 11000-block Scarborough Dr.: Late report was received about a theft from auto. Vehicle was parked in front of his residence and someone rummaged through his car and stole a USB cable. No signs of forced entry nor attempts to punch the ignition. Complainant admitted he may have forgotten to lock his vehicle.
• May 4, 4:02 a.m., 11900-block Nordel Way: A Delta police officer observed a vehicle driving 50 km/hr in a posted 60 km/hr zone. A vehicle stop was conducted and an odour of liquor was detected on the driver’s breath along with slurred speech. Two breath samples were obtained and both displayed “warn.” Driver was issued an immediate roadside prohibition. The vehicle was left parked in a nearby parking lot and the driver took a taxi home.
