North Delta crime beat: Week of Aug. 13

A selection of property crimes submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department

The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.

The following are some of the calls Delta Police responded to in the previous week:

• Aug. 13, 6:21 a.m., 9300-block 120th St.: Police attended a business where the complainant reported that the glass door had been shattered. Upon police arrival the property representative was contacted, who advised that the cash register had been moved and that the money inside the till was stolen. Estimated value of damage was $900.

• Aug. 14, 8:51 a.m., 1100-block Cliveden Ave.: Police attended a business after a staff member reported that one of the company’s trucks had been broken into. Staff advised that there was approximately $1,200 worth of ice cream stolen.

• Aug. 14, 12:30 p.m., Huff Road: Police attended the off-leash dog park where the complainant advised that her dog while off leash got into some marijuana and was feeling sick. The complained made officers aware that this has happened to other dog owners before. Police attended and walked the park but were unable to locate any further drugs. North Delta District Community Police Office volunteers were notified, and attended the park to conduct a clean-up.

• Aug. 16, 12:30 a.m., Highway 91: Police observed a fast moving vehicle on the Alex Fraser Bridge. A visual estimation of the speed of the vehicle was in excess of 130 km/h in a posted 90 km/h zone. The vehicle was observed driving closely behind a vehicle in an attempt to pass. Once traffic cleared the vehicle accelerated, reaching a paced speed of 146 km/h. The vehicle continued to gain distance at which point police activated emergency lights. A traffic stop was conducted where the driver was issued a speeding ticket and the vehicle was impounded.

• Aug. 16, 6:59 p.m., 7100-block 120th St.: Report of a shoplifter attempting to steal $414 worth of merchandise. Items recovered by the loss prevention officer include multiple video games concealed in a bag.

• Aug. 17, 8:38 p.m., 7300-block 120th St.: Police attended a call of a shoplifter attempting to steal speakers from the display. Estimated value of electronics was $600.

• Aug. 18, 2:07 a.m., 7800-block Swanson Dr.: Police received a complaint of a loud party in the backyard at this location. Police attended and spoke to the resident, who was cooperative and apologetic. Resident was advised of the municipal noise bylaw, and they moved everyone inside.

• Aug. 18, 3:45 p.m., 8800-block 120th St.: Police observed a male enter a vehicle and have hard time putting his seat belt on. As the male began driving police noticed he was driving at a slow rate and pressing his breaks when it was not necessary. Police conducted a traffic stop with the vehicle in the 11600-block of 84th Ave. Upon speaking with the driver, police could smell a moderate odour of liquor. Police asked the driver when he consumed his last drink, to which the driver replied, “yesterday evening.” A breathalyzer test was conducted, which the driver failed.
