The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.
The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:
• Aug. 24, 12:32 p.m., address withheld: A member of the public contacted police to request removal of old firearms he had inherited, along with ammunition. The firearms were rusted and in poor condition. Police attended and seized the firearms and ammo for destruction.
• Aug. 26, 1:11 a.m., 9000-block Hayward Pl.: Police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle and upon approach the male driver switched seats and shut the car off, in full view of the approaching member. Police observed empty liquor containers visible in the car and the male spoke with slurred speech. An approved screening device demand was read and the male provided two breath samples, both resulting in a “fail.” The male was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition, and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days
• Aug. 26, 7:10 a.m., 900-block Highway 91: Police were conducting proactive patrols when a vehicle was observed approaching at a speed of 137 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. Police initiated a traffic stop, issued the driver a ticket for excessive speed and impounded the vehicle for seven days.
• Aug. 26, 9:10 a.m., 12000-block 92nd Ave.: Police observed someone throwing lit cigarettes on the ground, and stopped to investigate. The individual was determined to have an active warrant for their arrest out of another jurisdiction. They were taken into custody and released, on a promise to appear in court on a later date.
• Aug. 26, 9:57 p.m., 11800-block Highway 10: Complainant reported a food truck with graffiti designs was blocking lanes in the nearby area. The complainant was also concerned that vehicles may not be able to see the van in time. Police attended and spoke with the owner of the van, who advised that he recently purchased the van and was driving it home when it overheated. The male contacted a tow truck prior to police arriving on scene and left without further issue.
• Aug. 28, 8:36 p.m., 6000-block Bower Crt.: Complainant reported a suspicious van with three males in his neighbour’s driveway. Police attended the location and spoke with the homeowner, who advised that a delivery company had just dropped off a piano for her children. Police found nothing suspicious and notified the complainant of the outcome.
