North Delta crime beat: Week of Aug. 6

A selection of property crimes submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department

The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls Delta Police responded to in the previous week:

• Aug. 7, 2:12 a.m., 11200-block 72nd Ave.: Police conducted a traffic stop where officers observed an overwhelming odour of alcohol coming from inside the vehicle. The driver was removed from the vehicle, where further indications of impairment were observed. A breathalyzer test was conducted which the driver failed two times, resulting in the vehicle being impounded.

• Aug. 7, 7000-block Highway 17: Delta police officers conducted laser enforcement in a posted 80 km/h zone. Officers observed many vehicles speeding, including a motorcycle that was speeding excessively. Laser confirmed a speed of 133 km/h. The driver was stopped and charged with excessive speeding and the motorcycle was impounded.

• Aug. 8, 11:43 a.m.: Police were called to report a fraud through the complainant’s bank account. Complainant already opened a fraud investigation with her bank and was advised to make a police report. A few days prior, a cheque had been deposited into her bank account with her name on the front, followed immediately by an e-transfer. A total of three different incidents were identified for a total of $4,000 deposited to an unknown account. Personal information was likely obtained through a phishing scam to her mobile phone.

• Aug. 9, 800-block Cliveden Ave.: A business reported seven truck batteries stolen from customer vehicles that were parked in the back parking lot of a repair shop. The complainant advised police the batteries were taken sometime overnight. No other damages reported. Each battery is valued as $150. Total theft valued at $1,050.

• Aug. 9, 6:11 a.m., 7500-block 120th St.: Police were dispatched to a commercial break-and-enter. The complainant advised she had discovered the glass front door shattered but had not entered. Police cleared the business and found no one inside. Police confirmed a break-and-enter from pry marks on door where entry was gained. A TV was smashed in an unsuccessful attempt to remove it from a wall. Damage is estimated at $2,000.

• Aug. 9, 10:37 a.m., 10800-block 85B Ave.: Police were dispatched to a reported suspicious vehicle parked in the neighbourhood. The complainant advised that the vehicle was damaged and had wires hanging from the ignition. Police attended and confirmed that both the plate and vehicle were recently stolen.

• Aug. 9, 2:30 p.m., 1400-block Cliveden Ave.: Police were dispatched to a reported theft-from-trailer. The complainant told police that a trailer parked on the company’s lot was found with the rear doors ajar and product strewn across the ground behind it. She estimates that more than $4,000 worth of tools were stolen overnight.
