North Delta crime beat, week of Dec. 29

A selection of property crimes submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department

The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.

The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:

• Dec. 29, 12:26 a.m., Alex Fraser Bridge: Police observed a vehicle travelling well above the posted speed limit. Attempts were made to close the distance as it was estimated that the driver was travelling in excess of 135 km/h. The vehicle was eventually located and confirmed travelled speed at 165 km/h in a zone with a posted speed limit of 60 km/h. A traffic stop was conducted at the south end of the bridge. The identified driver was unlicensed and served a notice of prohibition. Various tickets served, including one for excessive speed.

• Dec. 29, 9:30 a.m., 11700-block 95A Ave.: A rental property that is in the process of a renovation was broken into. Various items were taken from an area where property was being stored. A reminder for homeowners to ensure doors and windows are properly secured and areas surrounding your property are well lit.

• Dec. 30, 12:01 a.m., 4500-block River Rd. W.: A mother reported her young child missing from their residence. She had last seen her son opening the front door. Police attended the residence and with the help of mom, located her son in the driveway, inside one of the parked vehicles. The child stated that he was simply playing hide-and-seek.

• Dec. 30, 2:08 a.m., 126th Street and 96th Avenue in Surrey: Delta police conducted a traffic stop as the vehicle did not display an “N” sign. In conversation with the driver, a distinct odour of liquor emanated from the vehicle. Breath samples were taken and both resulted in a “Warn.” The driver was served various tickets and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

• Jan. 3, 7:51 a.m., 8800-block 117A St.: Complainant reported a neighbour was stealing electricity. Police arrived and observed an extension cord from a neighbouring residence to the one in question. Police unplugged the cord and spoke to the neighbour about electricity use, and advised the neighbour they do not have permission to take electricity. No safety concerns, all parties were cooperative.

• Jan. 3, 9:25 p.m., 8900-block 120th St.: Police stopped a vehicle after records indicated a recent driver of this vehicle had been served a prohibited driving notice. Police confirmed the driver had an invalid licence, and the driver was subsequently arrested and warned for driving while prohibited (a criminal offence). The driver will be appearing in court in February. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

• Jan. 3, 11:51 p.m., 11200-block 86th Ave.: Police were contacted regarding a break-and-enter that had apparently occurred that night. Resident was unsure whether the front door had been locked. Numerous items were stolen. Police investigation is continuing.

• Jan. 5, 12:32 a.m., 7800-block 115th St.: A caller reported a possible domestic dispute in the area. Police attended and located a couple at a nearby residence. Both confirmed there was no fight, but stated they both had their hearing aids out and needed to yell across the house to hear one another. They both advised that they would keep the noise levels down for the remainder of the night.
