The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.
The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:
• Dec. 8, 10:09 a.m., 10900-block Highway 99: A DPD officer who was southbound on Highway 99 was passed by a Honda travelling at an estimated speed of 150-160 km/h. After closing the distance created by the Honda, the officer was able to pace it at a speed of no less than 150 km/h. The vehicle was stopped and the driver admitted to travelling at 150 km/h as he was late for Church. He was issued a violation ticket for excessive speed and a seven-day vehicle impoundment. Driver and his passenger called a family member for a ride.
• Dec. 9, 8:23 a.m., 8500-block 108th St.: Complainant called to report his vehicle was broken into outside of his residence sometime overnight. Items stolen include a dash cam adapter, spare change and a trailer hitch with lock and keys. There was no damage to his vehicle as he believes the truck was left unlocked.
• Dec. 9, 3:56 p.m., 8100-block 120th St.: A loss prevention officer reported a theft at a business. An unknown male attempted to leave without paying for $37 worth of items. When confronted, he dropped the items and fled southbound on 120th Street. Patrols were negative, and all goods were accounted for.
• Dec. 10, 2:56 a.m., 11800-block 72nd Ave.: Police observed a Chevrolet drive past a stop sign without any attempt to stop, and noted the vehicle was having difficulty staying within the lane. A vehicle stop was conducted and the driver denied drinking any alcohol, however he had a distinct odour of liquor on his breath and an empty can of Kokanee in his vehicle. He was read the approved screening device demand and provided a sample which was a “fail.” The second test also resulted in a “fail.” He was served an immediate roadside prohibition and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days. Police provided a ride home.
• Dec. 11, 7:10 a.m., 8000-block 120th St.: A report was received of a break-and-enter at a business. The property representative was contacted by her alarm company advising the back door alarm was triggered. There was significant damage to the rear door and approximately $10-15 in change was stolen.
• Dec. 11, 9:17 a.m., 11400-block 81A Ave.: Complainant reported a company pickup was stolen from his driveway overnight. The vehicle had less than a half tank of gas and all keys were accounted for. It was valued at approximately $4,000.
• Dec. 11, 3:11 p.m., 11200-block 88A Ave.: Complainant reported a parcel being stolen from her doorstep by an unknown person in a grey sedan. No description of driver. She advised the package contained shoes valued at $150.
• Dec. 11, 5:00 p.m., 10900-block Brandy Dr.: Complainant called police to report his SIN had been fraudulently used to open a Visa that had $20,000 in charges. Equifax and Transunion had been advised and the bank is closing the account and complainant won’t be responsible for charges.
• Dec. 12, 8:13 a.m., 10500-block Delsom Cres.: Delta police received a report that a four foot tall Big Bird and eight Peppermint Patties that light up, worth a total of $300, were stolen from in front of his home.
• Dec. 12, 4:33 p.m., 7300-block 120th St.: Business employee reported that his vehicle had been rummaged through while parked in mall parking lot. He informed police that he had lost his keys earlier in the day which subsequently lead to the unknown suspect gaining access to his vehicle. No items were taken as nothing of value was left inside. He was advised to acquire a new set of keys and to consider changing his residential locks.
• Dec. 13, 9:16 a.m., 9000-block 120th St.: Complainant reported that sometime between September and December her storage locker had been broken into. She showed the officer a locker with the lock hook cut off and the lock missing. Access would have been gained by using an issued access card. She advised nothing was stolen from her locker.
• Dec. 13, 11:18 a.m., 6500-block Wade Rd.: Delta Parks employee reported graffiti on the exterior side walls of the public washroom. Police attended and noted red spray paint with several depictions which were hard to make out. City employees were on site to paint over the graffiti.
• Dec. 14, 10:39 a.m., 8500-block 115A St.: Complainant reported she had been a victim of fraud. An unknown male caller stated he was calling from the Delta Police Department collecting donations for the MS Society. She agreed to donate $20, however the caller was extremely pushy and insisted she needed to donate a minimum of $25. Complainant gave her Mastercard number to process payment. Upon realizing this was a fraud, she contacted Mastercard to report the fraudulent charge and cancelled her credit card. Of note, Delta police will not phone residents collecting money for any charities. If this happens to you, please be advised it is a scam.
