The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.
The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:
• Feb 16, 1:19 p.m., 7000-block Westview Dr.: Police observed a vehicle parked in a dark, secluded turn-off at the above location. Police activated their vehicle’s emergency equipment and approached the vehicle. While approaching the vehicle, police noted that there was a lone male occupying the driver seat and the vehicle was running. A distinct odour of liquor was detected on his breath. The driver provided two breath samples resulting in a fail. The driver was issued a 90-day driving prohibition and a 30-day vehicle impoundment.
• Feb. 16, 10:28 p.m., 11800-block 88th Ave.: A building manager contacted police to advise that surrounding mailboxes had been broken into. Residents are encouraged to contact Canada Post to report any issues with lost or stolen mail.
• Feb. 18, 11:58 a.m., 10300-block Nordel Court: A car owner called police to report that sometime during the night an unknown individual cut the catalytic converter out from under his vehicle. The vehicle was parked overnight in a parking lot. Approximate damage was $3,000.
• Feb. 18, 10:30 a.m., 11700 Carley Pl.: A complainant reported a theft from her vehicle at her residence. The vehicle was parked in the driveway overnight and may not have been locked. Various items were stolen from inside including electronics. There were no signs of forced entry. A reminder to remove all valuables out of your vehicles and to lock your doors.
• Feb. 19, 4:10 p.m., 954 Alex Fraser Bridge: Police received a report of a hit-and-run that occurred on the Alex Fraser Bridge. The vehicle sustained minor damage. The other vehicle left the scene, despite attempts from the other driver motioning for it to pull over.
• Feb. 20, 5:35 p.m., 8000-block Nordel Way: A complainant contacted police to report a suspicious occurrence that resulted in a fraud. An unknown male driving a luxury vehicle approached the complainant and asked him to help with gas and food. The male was asking for money in exchange for gold jewelry, which turned out to be imitation gold.
• Feb. 20, 10:44 p.m., 7100-block 120th St.: Police were conducting enforcement in the above noted area specifically targeting impaired drivers. Police observed a vehicle driving through a parking lot at a high rate of speed. A traffic stop was conducted and a distinct odour of liquor was emanating from the driver. A breath sample was provided and the driver blew a “warn.” The driver’s vehicle was seized for three days and the driver was issued a violation ticket. The driver left the scene on foot.
• Feb. 23, 8:20 p.m., 11000-block River Rd.: Police were called to a building where a woman was sleeping and appeared unprepared for the weather conditions. Police spoke with the woman who advised she had consumed drugs previously the night before. Due to medical concerns Emergency Health Services attended and took the woman to hospital for examination. No criminal offence.
