The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.
The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:
• Jan. 12, 6:50 p.m., 8000-block 120th St.: A loss prevention officer reported a suspected shoplifter from a nearby store. Police arrived and spoke with the suspected shoplifter, who advised she had mistakenly carried three makeup items out while she looked for a buggy. She stated that she had intended to purchase the items and was going to continue grocery shopping. There were no charges placed due to no history of theft and the possibility of it being an honest mistake.
• Jan. 13, 1:01 p.m., 7700-block Highway 91: Police were conducting mobile speed enforcement southbound when a vehicle drove by at a speed of 137 km/h in a posted 90 km/h zone. Police stopped the vehicle and the driver was issued an excessive speeding ticket. The vehicle was towed.
• Jan. 15, 9:49 p.m., 7000-block 120th St.: Police were requested to assist when a man who was out walking his dog required an immediate trip to the hospital, resulting in the puppy not having a place to go. The puppy was at first cautious and unsure about going inside the police vehicle, however police assured him that he was a good boy and was going to be taken home, not to jail. Once inside, the puppy was delighted with the amount of leg room the police vehicle had and was happy to look outside the window while listening to some good tunes throughout transit. Once at his home, the puppy was greeted by his owners’ friend who would be taking good care of him for the time being. The puppy was very grateful for the assistance and thanked the police with an affectionate wag of his tail.
• Jan. 16, 7:05 a.m., Alex Fraser Bridge: Police were driving when they observed a speeding vehicle approach them from behind at an estimated speed of 120 km/h. The rear radar locked the speed at 114 km/h and front radar locked the speed at 122 km/h in a 70 km/h zone. The driver was issued with an excessive speeding ticket and their vehicle was towed.
• Jan. 16, 1:08 p.m., Nordel Way and 112th Street: Police were dispatched to a three-vehicle incident. Police spoke with witnesses who both stated they saw a vehicle run a red light heading southbound and collide with a vehicle heading eastbound. Police spoke with the driver who was struck and she stated that the vehicle had hit her first and the impact of the collision caused her to collide into another vehicle. Minor injuries were sustained and the southbound driver was issued a ticket for a failing to stop at a red light.
• Jan. 16, 11:50 p.m., 7200-block 120th St.: Police observed a male stumbling and losing his balance as he walked on the sidewalk. Police stopped the male in a nearby parking lot. The man was uncooperative and stated that he did not speak English, despite a three-minute-long conversation in English. The male was ticketed for intoxication in a public place and police drove him to his residence.
• Jan. 17, 6:19 p.m., 11000-block 85A Ave.: Complainant reported a vehicle had hit her parked car and was blocking her driveway. Police attended and the complainant provided video surveillance showing the vehicle was parked and unoccupied when it rolled into her vehicle. Police spoke with the owner of the vehicle, who was unaware of the collision at that time. Both parties were advised to report to ICBC.
