The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.
The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:
• July 15, 3:50 p.m., 11600-block Kittson Pky.: Complainant called police to advise that his vehicle was broken into while parked in the Watershed Park parking lot. While he was taking a walk in the park, two windows of the vehicle were smashed and various items were stolen from inside.
• July 17, 11:11 a.m., Highway 91/Highway 10 off-ramp: Police conducting patrols in the area noticed a vehicle parked on the off-ramp. The vehicle had been parked in the same location for a few days. There were no notes on the vehicle indicating why the vehicle was left abandoned at the side of the road. Police made contact with the registered owner, who advised the vehicle had broken down. For safety, the vehicle was towed.
• July 17, 1:06 a.m., 11400-block 73rd Ave.: Caller reported that her vehicle had been rummaged through overnight. The woman stated that the vehicle was left unlocked but sustained no damage. Nothing was stolen, however two lawn chairs were found left in the backyard — possibly belonging to and left behind by the perpetrators. A reminder to ensure that vehicle doors are locked; many times thieves are looking for easy access and will otherwise move on.
• July 19, 4:40 p.m., Alex Fraser Bridge: A driver reported that she saw a driver of an SUV using his cell phone with both hands, while swerving on the bridge. Although a late report of this incident was made to police, police issued a traffic complaint letter to the registered owner. A reminder that when you see dangerous driving or cellphone use by other drivers to contact police immediately.
• July 20: Police set up a CounterAttack which resulted in three three-day impairment warnings, one 90-day driving prohibition with the car impounded, three other vehicles impounded, two tickets issued for excessive speed and street racing, four violation tickets issued, and 51 drivers that were required to have their sobriety tested.
• July 20, 11:28 p.m., Brooke Road/84th Avenue: Police observed a vehicle swerving between lanes and at times following another vehicle too closely. Police conducted a traffic stop to check for sobriety. The driver was given multiple opportunities to provide a suitable sample and police explained the jeopardy of not providing a sample. The driver opted to still not provide a suitable sample and police issued the driver a 90-day driving prohibition. (Refusing to provide a sample receives the same penalty as a fail.)
