The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.
The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:
• July 29, 12:32 p.m., 8100-block 120th St.: Complainant called police to advise that a vehicle had a tinted cover on their rear licence plate and was last seen in the 8100-block of 120th Street. DPD conducted area patrols, however the vehicle was gone on arrival. A traffic warning letter was sent to the registered owner.
• July 30, 4:07 p.m., 7000-block 119th St.: Complainant reported her friend had been the target of a phone scam. The complainant advised that she received a phone call where the caller stated he was CBSA and that she was required to send money to another province in the form of gift cards to resolve the issue. The complainant purchased $300 worth of gift cards, but did not give the numbers to the caller as she realized it may be a scam. The complainant was advised to block the phone number and report the incident to Canada Anti-Fraud Centre and Equifax.
• July 31, 9:30 a.m., 6000-block 120th St.: A Delta police officer was stopped at a red light, and once the light turned green the officer observed the vehicle in front of his police car accelerate at very high rate of speed. The officer estimated the driver to be going more than 40 km/h over the posted speed limit, and his radar locked in the speed at 109 km/h. The constable pulled the driver over and served him with an excessive speeding ticket, as well as impounded the vehicle for a period of seven days.
• July 31, 9:30 p.m., 6600-block Baker Rd.: Complainant called to report a theft of two bikes with a combined value of $2,020 from the open carport of their residence. The two bikes were locked together with a cable but the suspect cut the lock and stole the two bikes. Police are investigating the theft.
• Aug. 1, 7:05 p.m., 7000-block 120th St.: Police responded to a theft in progress from a local business. Total theft $20. The business did not wish to pursue charges.
• Aug. 1, 11:00 p.m., near 120th Street and 70th Avenue: A Delta police constable conducted a vehicle stop after witnessing the vehicle leave a local liquor store. As the constable approached the vehicle he detected a faint odour of liquor emanating from the mouth area of the driver. With reasonable suspicion of alcohol consumption, the officer requested the driver perform a sobriety test. The driver was given two separate sobriety tests, both of which resulted in “fail” readings. Consequentially, the officer gave the driver a 90-day driving suspension and had the vehicle towed, where it was to be impounded for 30 days. The driver and passengers left the area with another friend.
