The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.
The following are some of the calls Delta Police responded to in the previous week:
• June 26, 2:50 a.m., 1500-block Derwent Way: Report received of a theft from a courier truck. Complainant told police that the door of his truck was ajar and packages were open on the ground between the vehicle and the loading bay. Police found more than 40 packages opened and/or stolen. Police are waiting for the approximate value and inventory of what was stolen from the complainant.
• June 26, 5:53 a.m., Nordel Way: Report received of a two-vehicle collision eastbound on Nordel Way and Brooke Road. The vehicle driving eastbound failed to stop at the red light and collided with a southbound vehicle on Brooke Road. Police arrived on scene at 6 a.m. and found both vehicles damaged and in the intersection. Driver in the eastbound vehicle was treated for minor injuries and issued a ticket for failing to stop at a red light at an intersection.
• June 26, Hellings Elementary: Complainant reported an ongoing issue of an unknown person(s) dumping clothing and other belongings in the bushes in the field behind Hellings Elementary. Complainant told police he often cleans up the area and does not report it. Police told the complainant to call police if he sees any suspicious activity in the area.
• June 26, 7:42 a.m., 6100-block 104th St.: An officer stopped a driver going at an excessive speed. The driver of a Honda Accord followed behind a Delta Police vehicle travelling southbound. The vehicle then entered the northbound lane and began to pass the police officer at a high rate of speed. The officer followed the vehicle as it continued to speed east and conducted a traffic stop. The vehicle reached a speed of 120 km/h. The driver was charged with excessive speed and had their vehicle towed.
• June 26, 11:24 p.m., 11600-block 89th Ave.: Report received of two thefts-from-autos. Unforced entry was made into two unlocked vehicles parked in a driveway. A pair of keys were stolen out of vehicle one. The second vehicle had $100 in BC Liquor store gift cards taken.
• June 27, 10:39 a.m., 11900-block 92A Ave.: Complainant reported to police that she may have been the victim of fraud after recently buying a computer and looking for tech support. She found a tech service provider, “Computer Mike,” who requested $550 in prepayment via credit card. “Computer Mike” then requested the complainant send him two $50 iTunes gift cards. Delta Police advised the complainant to end all conversations with “Computer Mike” and advised her to not provide personal information to unknown entities. Complainant was also advised to contact her bank and cancel her card to deal with any possible credit card charges.
• June 27, 4:15 p.m., 8000-block 110th St.: Complainant reported to police that an unknown person entered her backyard and stole a women’s bike that was stored on the property. The bike was not locked and nothing else was stolen. The bike was valued at $150.
• June 27, 11:45 p.m., 11900-block 96th Ave.: A Delta Police officer conducted a vehicle stop after observing a driver in a black Audi signal late and do a slow, wide turn. The officer detected an odour of liquor on the driver’s breath and the driver admitted to drinking wine. A roadside breathalyzer test was conducted with a fail result. The driver requested a second test which also resulted in a fail. The driver was issued an immediate 90-day roadside suspension and had their vehicle impounded for 30 days, which was towed from the scene.
• June 27, 11:49 p.m., 11700-block 82A Ave.: Complainant reported the shadow of a figure walking on his back porch. Police attended and entered the complainant’s backyard, and the officer on scene heard a person jumping the fence. Police commands to stop were not heeded. An area search of the neighborhood came out negative.
• June 28, 9:00 a.m., 8000-block 120th St.: A dine-and-dash was reported to police from a complainant at a restaurant. The suspect told the complainant that his bank card didn’t work and left his backpack as collateral for a $17.72 bill, promising to return with payment. The suspect was located a short time later involved in an unrelated incident at the North Delta Recreation Centre. The suspect was arrested on an outstanding warrant and his backpack was submitted to exhibits, pending the suspect paying his bill at the restaurant.
• June 29, 11:07 a.m., 112th Street and 84th Avenue: Complaint reported a deer causing traffic chaos. Police attended the area and located “Lucy” the deer eating a meal at a nearby field. “Lucy” appeared happy to call North Delta home and was no longer causing traffic chaos. The B.C. Conservation Officer Service was contacted, however they advised they would not attend. “Lucy” was left to find her way back home.
• June 29, 10:13 p.m., 8000-block 119A St.: Police attended a home after receiving reports of a loud party. Resident of the home were advised of the complaint, and told police he would turn the music down and have the party quiet down for the remainder of the evening.
• July 1, 12:00 a.m., 9000-block Ebor St.: Police were called to a residence for a loud party and music complaint. Police attended and spoke with the resident, who told police he would turn down the music and quiet the party.
• July 1, 5:20 p.m., 7000-block 120th St.: Report received of a shoplifter stealing $150 in razor blades. Complainant provided a description of the suspect who last seen crossing the road into Surrey. Police attended the scene but area patrols turned up negative.
