The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.
The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:
• June 30, 6:46 a.m., 11700-block 80th Ave.: Police were dispatched to a residence for an accidental 911 call. Dispatch notified police that the caller was trying to call India and the first digits were 911. Police were unable to attend right away due to a priority call. When police attended the residence the caller had already left for work. Police conducted a walk-through of the home and found everything in order, no issues.
• July 1, 11:26 a.m., 8500-block 112th St.: Complainant attended the North Delta Public Safety Building to report a vehicle parked illegally on the sidewalk. Police attended the area and located a vehicle parked on the boulevard with passenger side tires on the sidewalk. Police contacted the registered owner who advised that she was currently on her way to pick up her vehicle. The registered owner was issued a verbal warning for parking on the boulevard. Police remained in the area until the vehicle was moved.
• July 2, 8:08 a.m., 7900-block Modesto Dr.: Complainant reported a theft from his vehicle that was parked in his driveway. No damage to the vehicle was noted as the complainant advised that the vehicle had been left unlocked. Two pairs of sunglasses, one pair of prescription eyeglasses, one gym bag, one pair of running shoes and $60 in change were taken from the vehicle. Total value of items stolen is approximately $1,100.
• July 2, 11:49 a.m., 7000-block 120th St.: During a traffic enforcement stop, police conducted a roadside mechanical inspection of a GMC van. Officers found numerous mechanical safety defects, including an inoperative parking brake, a rear tire with no measurable tread, a windshield cracked in excess 300 millimetres, along with other defects. The van’s licence plates were seized and returned to ICBC as the vehicle was not in driveable condition. Vehicle towed.
• July 2, 1:57 p.m., 7000-block 120th St.: Complainant called police to report that there was an arson in the washroom at the mall. The complainant stated that someone entered the washroom and lit a roll of toilet paper on fire, which was quickly extinguished. Police attended and examined the scene.
• July 2, 4:16 p.m., 11300-block 75B Ave.: Complainant attended the North Delta Public Safety Building to report that he was the victim of a scam. The complainant showed his tablet screen which had a permanent screen with “call 1-800-xxx-xxxx.” The complainant stated that he pressed the call button and it linked him to an operator who advised him that he needs to purchase gift cards in order to fix his tablet. The complainant purchased $2,100 in gift cards. The complainant was advised that police were unfortunately unable to track the accounts where the gift cards may have gone, but that he can try calling the gift card companies to shut the accounts. Police have learned from previous files that this number is spoofed from a third party app.
• July 2, 6:25 p.m., 11700-block 80th Ave.: Complainant reported that a vehicle had been parked on the street for the past five days. Police attended and found the vehicle secure, confirmed the VIN and saw there was no damage to the ignition. Police attempted to call the registered owner, however could not make contact. A Bylaw Offence Notice was left on vehicle for parking in excess of 72 hours under section 6.5.
• July 3, 8:15 p.m., 8700-block Delwood Dr.: Complainant called police to report that a group of youth were playing basketball and listening to loud music. Police attended while three youth were getting into a vehicle. The driver stated that they were playing basketball and just leaving. Police advised the youth that the loud music with swear words upsets families with young children. The youth stated that they understood and will keep the music down next time.
• July 5, 10:30 a.m., 11200-block 72nd Ave.: Complainant reported a theft-from-vehicle while it was parked in front of his garage. Complainant advised the theft occurred sometime overnight. The glove box and console were rummaged through, however there was no damage as the vehicle was likely left unlocked.
• July 5, 10:37 a.m., 7400-block 112A St.: Complainant reported his bicycle had been stolen from the side of his residence. The bike was last seen on July 3. Nothing else was missing. Approximate value of the bike is $200.
• July 5, 6:30 p.m., 7000-block 120th St.: Delta police attended a fast food establishment following a report from staff of a male sleeping in the lobby. Upon arrival, police identified the male who advised that he had been drinking, but was still able to care for himself. The male was advised that that he was no longer welcomed at the establishment, which he understood and said that he would stay elsewhere.
• July 6, 5:50 p.m., 8800-block 112th St.: Complainant reported two large dogs running loose in the field. The owner of the dogs collected the animals and returned to the residence. Officers attended the residence and spoke to the pet owner who advised the dogs had escaped through an open door. The pet owner was very apologetic and advised the animals would be secured more thoroughly in the future.
