The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:
• March 10, 1:59 a.m., 600-block Caldew St.: Police received a noise complaint of loud jack-hammering coming from the Fraser River between the Alex Fraser Bridge and the Queensborough area. Officers attended and conducted area patrols. No noise was heard other than moving forklifts and shunting trains on Annacis Island.
• March 10, 10:16 a.m., 11100-block 81st Ave.: Complainant called police on behalf of her son who discovered a theft from his vehicle. The theft occurred sometime overnight outside the family residence. The vehicle was left unsecure and entry was gained via the driver side window. Police were advised that two to three cheques in the registered owner’s name were taken from the vehicle, however, they were already cashed via mobile application. The complainant will advise his bank as a precaution.
• March 10, 1:12 p.m., 7900-block Highway 17: Complainant (Driver 1) reported that while driving westbound on South Fraser Perimeter Road at the Highway 91 connector a white pick-up truck (Driver 2) cut him off and swore at him. Police spoke to Driver 2, who was very cooperative but denied the above. Driver 2 advised that Driver 1 was eating a large sandwich and was driving very slowly, thus disrupting the flow of traffic and forcing others to pass him. Driver 2 was instructed by police to drive more carefully and cautiously in the future, and he agreed to do so.
• March 11, 9:59 p.m., 8100-block 120th St.: A Superstore loss prevention officer reported that a male attempted to steal a luffa. Total value was less than $2 and the luffa was recovered. The male was sent on his way and banned from the store as it is not in public interest to lay charges.
• March 12, 4:04 p.m., 7100-block 120th St.: A Walmart loss prevention officer reported that an intoxicated male was rolling around on the ground outside of the store. Delta police attended the scene and located a severely intoxicated male passed out on the sidewalk. BC Ambulance was called out for medical assistance.
• March 13, 4:16 a.m., 9300-block 118th St.: Complainant called police to report a suspicious male going through garbage cans. Police located a male in the area going through recycling bins that had been left on the street for pickup. No offence was committed as the male was simply collecting discarded cans.
• March 13, 9:36 p.m., 8200-block 120th St.: Restaurant staff reported a customer left without paying for their meal. Staff advised the male stated they would pay tomorrow. Police spoke with the primary operator of a vehicle, who advised they were more than willing to pay for their meal but he was upset that the manager tried to charge them the automatic gratuity for eight people. The male advised he did not believe his senior mother and one-year-old baby fall under this rule. The male advised he was willing to pay the bill but left because of the forced tip. Police advised both parties this was a civil matter and to proceed through civil means. Restaurant staff advised they would likely ban the male from the restaurant. Value of the meal was $140.
• March 16, 8:20 a.m., 8500-block Nordel Way: A Delta police officer was conducting laser speed enforcement when he measured a vehicle driving at 113 km/h in a marked 60 km/h zone. Driver was served a violation ticket for excessive speed and their vehicle was impounded for seven days.
