The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.
The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:
• March 24, 10:30 a.m., 11100-block Kendale Way: Complainant reported that his vehicle had been broken into while parked in front of his residence. The man advised that his vehicle had been left unlocked. Various items stolen. No further damage to vehicle.
• March 24, 11:10 a.m., 7200-block Highway 17: Police were conducting on-foot laser enforcement. A vehicle driving at a high rate of speed, 143 km/hr in an 80 km/hr zone, was pulled over. The driver was charged with excessive speeding, served a violation tickets, and had his vehicle impounded. The driver left safely in a taxi.
• March 25, 2:09 a.m., 8700-block 120th St.: Police were conducting proactive patrols in the area when they came across a vehicle driving considerably faster than the other traffic. While police approached the vehicle, the driver slowed down considerably to drive the speed limit. Police conducted a traffic stop. A strong odour of liquor was detected while speaking to the driver. The driver refused to comply with police. He was served a 90-day refusal, and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days, and towed.
• March 27, 8:57 p.m., 11400-block 75B Ave.: Complainant reported that she noticed several unusual charges dating back to November on her Visa card. The vendor name was “Facebook.” The complainant googled a phone number to make a report with Facebook. She spoke to a male who asked for gift cards to be bought worth $2,700. The serial numbers of the gift cards were provided and since redeemed. Police provided several preventative steps to ensure this will not recur.
• March 28, 7:12 p.m., 8600-block 120th St.: A father accidentally locked his young child in a vehicle. He called police asking for help. Police attended and were able to assist with safely freeing the child from the vehicle.
• March 29, 10:39 a.m., 1500-block Derwent Way: Police assisted Delta Fire Department with a hazmat situation. A strong odour of sulfur had been detected by employees. The odour was deemed to be non-toxic and posed no risk to public safety. As a precaution the businesses in the area were closed for the remainder of the day.
• March 29, 12:36 p.m., 7700-block 115th St.: Complainant reported that his Visa card had been compromised. The card was used several times for various online purchases. There was $609 of unauthorized charges. The compromised credit card was cancelled.
• March 30, 7:47 a.m., 7200-block Highway 17: Police were conducting on-foot laser enforcement. A vehicle was observed driving at a high rate of speed. The laser confirmed speed at 130 km/hr in an 80 km/hr zone. The driver was charged with excessive speeding, served a violation ticket, and had their vehicle impounded.
