The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.
The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:
• March 31, 2:08 p.m., 10900-block River Rd.: Police were called to a theft from an auto that occurred at the complainant’s residence. The vehicle was unlocked and rummaged through. No damage was evident however perfume, papers and a set of 15 unmarked keys were stolen.
• March 31, 6:51 p.m., 11300-block 92nd Ave.: Police witnessed a male urinating on the road. After receiving a bylaw notice, the male got back into his vehicle and turned on the ignition. Police then conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle, were the male admitted to consuming four beers. The driver was given a breath sample, which he failed. An immediate roadside prohibition was served and the vehicle was left parked legally on the side of the road.
• March 31, 11:37 p.m., 7000-block 120th St.: While police were conducting a traffic stop to a vehicle with their emergency lights activated, police observed another vehicle driving at high rates of speed into the parking lot directly adjacent to the officer’s traffic stop. The vehicle in the parking lot then conducted an ongoing burnout in excess of 60 seconds. The officer ended the initial traffic stop and proceeded to stopping the suspect vehicle shortly thereafter. When police asked the driver if they saw the police officer with their emergency lights on, the driver responded along the lines of admitting they did see police but did not care. Due to extensive driving history, the driver was issued a seven-day violation for stunt driving. The vehicle was towed away and a family member attended to pick up the driver.
• April 1, 2:30 a.m., 11200-block 72nd Ave.: Police observed a vehicle travelling at high rates of speed. The vehicle was paced going 116-122 km/h in a 50km/h zone. Police conducted a traffic stop where the driver admitted they were racing home due to stomach issues. The driver was issued an excessive speed violation ticket while the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
• April 1, 3:57 p.m., 8100-block 120th St.: Loss prevention officers of a store attempted to arrest an individual who stole chocolate bars. The individual was very hostile and actively resisting arrest. Police arrived on scene to arrest the individual. Upon searching the suspect, a small baggie of meth and a vehicle key was located. The vehicle was found in the parking lot and appeared to have been stolen. The suspect was taken out of the area, the drugs were seized and the rightful owner of the vehicle was contacted.
• April 1, 4:59 p.m., 11800-block of 85B Ave.: Police were called to a vehicle that had its grill stolen. Grill belonged to a Mercedes-Benz which included a front bumper camera and two motion sensors. Approximate value of the grill is $600. Owner was provided a file number for their ICBC claim. Police also advised the owner to notify police of any suspicious people and discussed crime prevention techniques through environmental design.
• April 1, 6:34 p.m., 8100-block 120th St.: Police were called to a store where the loss prevention officer reported a mother and daughter were observed shoplifting $675.04 worth of product. Both individuals were advised they will be compelled to court via summons for theft under $5,000. Both individuals received a six-month verbal ban from the store as well.
• April 2, 10:53 p.m., 11700-block 83A Ave.: Police were dispatched to the scene of a house fire to conduct traffic control. Fire was deemed not suspicious by the fire captain and everyone was evacuated from the house. No injuries other than a minor burn to one of the residents.
