The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.
The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:
• May 20, 2:17 p.m., 7400-block 115A St.: Complainant reported that his vehicle was broken into during the night. A few items stolen including a garage opener. No further damage to the vehicle. A friendly reminder to try to keep garage openers in a secure location if your vehicle is parked in your driveway or on the street.
• May 21, 10:35 a.m., 11500-block 80th Ave.: Police responded to a report of a driving complaint in the area. Complainant reported that a vehicle passed her and sped through the school zone. Police located the vehicle and the driver. Police issued driver a warning.
• May 22, 2:12 p.m., 11700-block 86th Ave.: Complainant reported that she had been a victim of a Criagslist rental scam. Complainant advised that she had sent an unknown party $400 via a bitcoin ATM in an attempt to rent a place. Once payment was received the scammer demanded more money before sending the rental contract. Scammer possibly overseas as text messages had various grammatical and spelling errors. Police advise the public to continue to be wary of the potential for internet-based scams, particularly when payment in requested in bitcoin or gift cards.
• May 22, 4:52 p.m., 11300-block 83rd Ave.: Reports of a male causing a disturbance at a store that refused to sell him beer. Staff at the store believed the male was intoxicated. The male left the store and drove off. Police attended and located the vehicle but there was no indication of impairment. The male stated he was upset about being denied service and agreed not to attend this location in the future.
• May 23, 10:39 a.m., 11000-block 72nd Ave.: Complainant advise that she was on her laptop when an unknown person began messaging her. She stated that she received several provocative pop-up images with a notification stating that she had a virus. The messenger then stated that he was tech support and attempted to provide her with instructions on how to recover her computer with virus protection software. Complainant believed this to be a scam. Police confirmed this to be a scam and advised her to disconnect her computer from the internet and seek reputable technical support.
• May 23, 3:11 p.m., 64th Avenue and 120th Street: Police were advised that a dog was left in an unoccupied vehicle while in a parking lot. The dog appeared to be in distress due to the hot weather. Upon police arrival, the dog had already been successfully removed from the vehicle. Owner advised that she was at an appointment. The dog displayed no signs of distress once it was given water and fresh air. Police instructed the dog owner to take the dog to the vet as a precautionary measure and not to leave the dog in an unoccupied vehicle again.
• May 24, 5:18 p.m., 11600-block 96th Ave.: Staff contacted police to report a male and female taking full rolls of paper towel from the gas pumps. The paper towel is free for customer use as needed but not in excess. Police advised registered owner of vehicle to stop stealing paper towels.
• May 25, 4:16 p.m., 8000-block Modesto Dr.: Complainant asked for police to speak to a driver of a vehicle who was speeding and driving erratically in the area. Police attended the residence of the driver and spoke to him about the dangers of excessive speed. Driver agreed to slow down.
• May 25, 9:31 p.m., 7000-block 120th St.: Police observed a vehicle driving in the oncoming lane while exiting the parking lot. A traffic stop was conducted. Impairments were noted, and the driver blew a fail on the approved screening device. Thes driver was served an immediate roadside prohibition and banned from driving for 30 days. Vehicle towed and impounded for 90 days.
