The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.
The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:
• May 4, 3:58 p.m., 6000-block Ryall Cres.: Police were contacted regarding an ongoing issue with large trucks travelling through the small residential streets, speeding, while children were playing on the street. The complainant felt that the route the trucks were taking was against Delta bylaw. Police attended and observed the route the trucks were taking, and contacted Delta Bylaw, who advised that they were aware of the issue and would be handling the file.
• May 4, 3:23 p.m., 10000-block Main St.: Complainant called police to report that a rewards credit card had been created in her name and fraudulently used for $700 worth of merchandise. Information was likely gathered through a virus in the victim’s computer. A reminder that frauds and scams are even more prevalent due to COVID-19. • May 5, 8:53 p.m., 11000-block 90th Ave.: Complainant reported group of males playing soccer in a local field. The complainant was concerned that the men were not practicing physical distancing recommendations. Police attended and spoke with the men, advising them that due to the current pandemic they should be following the Public Health Officer’s physical distancing recommendations. The men advised that they understood and would be on their way.
• May 6, 12:57 a.m., 11000-block 85A Ave.: Police were called to a report of yelling and loud music coming from a tent nearby. Upon arrival, police observed the homeowner and friends hanging out in a backyard tent. Police reminded the owner of noise bylaws. The homeowner agreed to move inside and lower the volume of the music.
• May 6, 12:39 p.m., 6400-block 120th St.: Delta police stopped a vehicle for a mechanical inspection. Various mechanical defects were found, including the air bag light, an inoperable parking brake, an inoperable seat belt, a broken driver side seat mount, as well as axle damage. Notice and order issued to the driver. The licence plates were seized and the truck was placed out of service and towed to a shop of the owner’s choosing.
• May 7, 7:55 a.m., 10500-block Nordel Way: Delta police were conducting stationary laser speed enforcement when an officer observed a vehicle quickly approaching in the lane one. Laser verified the sped of the vehicle at 108 km/h in the posted 60 km/h zone. The driver was served a ticket for excessive speed and his car was impounded.
• May 9, 3:50 p.m., 11000-block 76A Ave.: Complainant reported a male shooting a bow and arrow in nearby park. Police attended and spoke with the archer, who was advised that shooting a bow and arrow in a public park was not permitted. The man was apologetic and co-operative, advising police that he did not know that he was not allowed to do so.
• May 11, 10:30 a.m., 11000-block 90th Ave.: Officers attended Gibson Elementary School in regard to a late report of mischief to the property (i.e. graffiti). The complainant reported that sometime between May 7 and May 8, an exterior wall on the north side of the building had been spray painted. The complainant advised that the school district maintenance personnel had already covered up the graffiti.
