North Delta crime beat, week of May 6

A selection of property crimes submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department

The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.

The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:

• May 6, 1:06 a.m., Highway 99 and Highway 91: Delta police received a report of theft of copper wire. Approximately 900 metres of copper wire that run between three light standards were cut out. Exact value of the wire is unknown.

• May 6, 9:48 a.m., 8100-block 120th St.: A loss prevention officer reported a shoplifter in custody after stealing $4 worth of milk. Subject of complaint stated he was dehydrated with no money so he opened the milk and drank it. He has been issued a civil ban from the establishment for six months.

• May 6, 6:50 p.m., 7200-block 120th St.: Complainant reported that her designer purse had been stolen when she placed it onto a small table inside an eatery. The purse contained various ID and cards, and fortunately as she was cancelling her cards no attempt to fraudulently use them had occurred.

• May 7, 5:28 a.m., 8900-block 117A St.: Sometime overnight complainant’s vehicle was entered while parked in his driveway. An iPhone 5C, an LG G6, HD headphones and $10 cash were stolen from inside, with a total approximate value of $600. No other vehicles appear to have been rummaged through in the area.

• May 7, 9:15 a.m., 9500-block 116th St.: Staff reported the theft of $40 in flowers that were displayed outside the establishment. Staff indicated that another flower grab had occurred months prior.

• May 8, 11:16 a.m., 11400-block 82nd Ave.: Delta police were informed that the driver who pulled into the lot may be impaired. Police located the vehicle and spoke with the driver when she returned and got into the driver’s seat. She had an odour of liquor on her breath and admitted to consuming the night previous. Suspicion formed and a breathalyzer demand was read. Test was administered twice and both readings were “fail.” Driver was served an immediate roadside prohibition and a vehicle impoundment form. Driver left the scene with a friend.

• May 8, 1:28 p.m., 7000-block 120th St.: A loss prevention officer reported that she had one male in custody for theft and was pressing charges. He had selected, concealed and attempted to leave with $472 worth of items without offering payment.

• May 9, 12:31 a.m., 7900-block 120th St.: A Delta police officer conducted a traffic stop after a vehicle was observed without headlights on and nearly side swiping two vehicles. There was a strong odour of liquor from the vehicle and the driver denied having had any alcoholic drinks. Driver provided a breath sample resulting in a “fail” and a second test resulted in same. Driver was still adamant that he was not drinking but eventually admitted to consuming three drinks. The officer advised that he was prohibited from driving for 90 days and his vehicle would be impounded for 30 days.

• May 9, 7:29 a.m., 11100-block 82nd Ave.: Complainant reported that tools were stolen from his Chevrolet pickup while parked in front of his residence. A yellow rotating laser valued at $8,000 and his M Scope valued at $1,000 were both missing. No damage to vehicle as items were in the open bed of the truck.

• May 11, 5:42 a.m., 11200-block 82nd Ave.: Complainant reported his green Ford F350 stolen from in front of his residence. His son had parked and locked the truck at 3 p.m. the previous day. All keys were accounted for and no debris was at the scene.

• May 11, 6:57 a.m., 10500-block Nordel Way: A Delta police officer was conducting laser enforcement when he observed a Ford Mustang at a high rate of speed estimated at 95 km/h. Laser confirmed the speed at 102 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. The vehicle was stopped and the driver was charged with excessive speed and a notice of seven-day vehicle impoundment. The driver and two passengers left in a taxi.

• May 11, 12:20 p.m., 8400-block 120th St.: Complainant reported losing her purse and advised she was called by the establishment not long after she left to advise that her purse was found in the washroom. Upon retrieving her purse, complainant discovered her credit card was missing. Bank has been notified and card cancelled. Police advised complainant to contact Equifax and Trans Union to prevent ID fraud.

• May 11, 6:28 p.m., 7700-block 118th St.: Complainant reported he made a $100 deposit on tires from a website and the unknown suspect stopped responding to arrangements to complete the transaction. Payment was sent via e-transfer which automatically deposits the money into the suspect’s account. Bank has been notified.
