The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.
The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:
• Nov. 17, 9:18 p.m., 9000-block River Rd.: Police were called out to assist the Delta Fire Department with a vehicle fire. The cabin of a tractor trailer had caught fire in the dash. The driver of the truck advised police he had just picked up the truck from a repair shop when the dash caught on fire. The driver attempted to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher before fire fighters arrived on scene. No injuries to anyone involved in the incident.
• Nov. 15, 10:48 a.m., 8200-block Swenson Way: Police were called to a report of a theft of a catalytic converter from a vehicle. The vehicle was parked in front of the business it belonged to. The approximate damage to the vehicle is estimated to be $400-$500. The vehicle was already taken to the shop before police arrived.
• Nov. 19, 7:34 p.m., Nordel Way and 120th Street: Police were called to a collision of a vehicle. The vehicle was on Nordel Way when it lost control and started to skid approximately 150 feet along the centre divider. Sparks from the skid ignited the vehicle’s fuel resulting in a fire. The vehicle was eventually fully engulfed in flames. The approximate damage to the vehicle was $15,000. The driver was not injured.
• Nov. 19, 7:47 p.m., 9300-block 120th St.: Police observed a vehicle make a u-turn. Police conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle and discovered an odour of liquor coming from the driver’s breath. A breath sample was taken, for which the driver blew a “warn.” An immediate roadside prohibition was served and the driver’s wife attended to pick up the vehicle.
• Nov. 20, 5:35 p.m., Highway 10 and 120th Street: Police observed a driver of a vehicle using an electronic device while driving. A traffic stop was conducted and an odour of liquor was smelled in the vehicle. The driver took a breath sample in which she blew a “warn.” An immediate roadside prohibition was served and the vehicle was towed away.
• Nov. 24, 6:00 a.m., 7400-block 118A St.: Police were called to the theft of a bicycle. The bicycle was stolen from under the owner’s rear deck. The bike was estimated to be worth around $400.
• Nov. 20, 10:00 p.m., 7800-block 112th St.: Police were called to a theft from a locker at Sungod Recreation Centre. Someone had left their credit cards in a locked locker while swimming. When they came back they realized someone had pried the locker open and stolen the cards. The owner of the credit cards called their credit card company and learned that their cards had already been used.
• Nov. 22, 5:22 p.m., 7200-block 120th St.: Police were called to a theft from a vehicle where the owner had just purchased items and placed them in her car. She then left the car again without locking the doors as they automatically lock on their own after a while. The suspect in the case was able to open the doors before they had locked and stole her newly-purchased Macbook Air laptop and brown leather backpack. The total value of items stolen was $1,900.

• Nov. 22, 4:09 p.m., 7800-block 112th St.: Police were called to a theft from a locker at Sungod Recreation Centre. The complainant advised police he had put his wallet in a locker while using the facilities. When he came back he noticed $20 was taken from his wallet. Nothing else taken other than money. The male advised police he made the report for information purposes only as no identification was stolen.
