The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.
The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:
• Oct. 28, 7:00 a.m., 11400-block 71st Ave.: Complainant reported that her vehicle had been rummaged through, with various items stolen, while parked in front of her residence. The owner recalls that she had locked her vehicle but the vehicle sustained no damage, with no signs of forced entry.
• Oct. 29, 7:39 p.m., 11000-block Commonwealth Cres.: Delta Fire requested Delta police for traffic control at a house fire. The homeowners returned home to find a fire had started at their residence. No one was injured. Delta police stayed on scene to ensure no flare ups continued overnight.
• Oct. 31, 9:05 a.m., 8800-block 120th St.: Police observed a vehicle fail to stop for a marked stop sign while leaving a shopping area. A traffic stop was conducted. While speaking with the driver, police noticed a strong distinct odour of liquor. Subsequently, the driver was asked to provide a breath sample, which resulted in a “fail.” The driver was served with a 90-day driving prohibition and a violation ticket, and the vehicle was towed.
• Oct. 31, various times and locations: Various bylaw complaints being made due to fireworks. Police were busy throughout the evening and into the early morning hours. Some large groups congregated at parks to let off fireworks. Police reminded residents to obtain a permit in the future. No significant issues.
• Nov. 1, 10:18 p.m., 117A Street and 89A Avenue: A taxi driver contacted police to request their assistance with a passenger who was refusing to pay his bill. Police located the cab, by which time all parties were cooperative. The passenger believed that the taxi driver had taken a longer route than necessary and wished to make a complaint. Information was exchanged and the passenger paid his bill, with no further issues.
• Nov. 2, 4:31 p.m., Bridlington Drive and 112th Street: A male contacted police to report that he observed people dumping a full bag of garbage in the bushes. Police attended the residence, speaking to an individual who admitted to dumping the garbage. Police escorted the male back to the site of the dumping and served him a City of Delta bylaw ticket. The individual cleaned up the mess and left by taxi with his garbage.
• Nov. 2, 8:29 p.m., 8100-block 117th St.: A caller reported observing a male being dragged by two other males. Police attended the scene and located the group. It was discovered that the male being dragged was very intoxicated (he drank too much after watching the UFC fight). His two friends were escorting him safely back to his residence, which was nearby.
• Nov. 3, 3:15 a.m., 7900-block 120th St.: Police were conducting patrols when they observed a vehicle leaving the parking lot at a high rate of speed. A traffic stop was initiated. The driver displayed many signs of impairment. The driver was requested to provide a breath sample, but refused, so police explained the consequences associated with a refusal. The driver is prohibited from driving his vehicle for 90 days, was served a violation ticket, and his vehicle was impounded.
