The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.
The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:
• Sept. 1, 3:13 p.m., 11000-block Lyon Rd.: Police attended a two-vehicle collision neither car was drivable. The investigation revealed that one vehicle was travelling westbound on Lyon Road when a fly allegedly flew through the window, distracting the driver, who then collided with a parked car. Both vehicles were towed. No injuries. Driver was served a ticket for driving without due care and attention.
• Sept. 1, 7:45 p.m., 8000-block 120th St.: Complainant reported that he had received a fraudulent call from a CRA agent and police officer advising that his bank account would be frozen. The complainant was advised to transfer all his funds to a Bitcoin machine because he was the target of a money laundering operation. The complainant advised that the fraudulent police officer provided a name and badge number and a fraudulent phone number. A reminder that police will not call to request money from you. If you believe you have been the victim of a scam or fraud, please contact DPD’s non-emergency line at 604-946-4411.
• Sept. 2, 12:34 p.m., 8400-block Nordel Way: A Delta police officer was travelling eastbound in a marked police car with an automated licence plate reader when he was alerted that the registered owner of a vehicle travelling westbound was prohibited from driving. The officer conducted a traffic stop, and the driver was served with an appearance notice for court and her car was impounded for seven days.
• Sept. 3, 9:00 a.m., 7000-block 114A St.: Complainant reported that an elderly family member had left the family home for a walk at 6:50 a.m. and had not returned. The complainant was concerned as the family member had a history of wandering and is high-risk due to dementia and other health concerns. At 10:36 a.m., the family member was located in the 8400-block of 122nd Street in Surrey by a concerned citizen. September is Alzheimer Awareness Month — the DPD encourages members of the public to educate themselves on how to help someone in distress, and are encouraging families to look into tracking devices for wanderers.
• Sept. 3, 3:34 p.m., 7400-block 115th St.: The North Delta district community liaison officer was conducting proactive patrols when he observed fire/smoke coming from a yard. The officer determined that the hedges at a residence were fully engulfed in flames and the residents were attempting to use a garden hose to put it out. Delta Fire attended and extinguished the fire. Approximately $5,000 damage was done to the hedges.
• Sept. 6, 9:11 p.m., 11000 84th Ave.: Complainant reported a gathering of 15-20 people in the common area of an apartment complex. Upon arrival, police learned that the function was for family, was approved by strata and that signs were posted advising of the event.
• Sept. 6, 12:52 a.m., 7600-block 120th St.: A Delta police officer was driving a marked police car when he observed two vehicles leaving a local business at a high rate of speed. One of the vehicles made a rapid u-turn across three lanes of traffic, with the vehicle fish-tailing. A traffic stop was initiated. The driver blew a “fail” on the alcohol screening device, and he was served a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition.
