The purpose of the crime beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. It is submitted weekly by the Delta Police Department. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.
The following are some of the calls police responded to in the previous week:
• Sept. 29, 10:41 a.m., 8800-block Brooke Rd.: Complainant reported the cover was stolen off his boat while it was parked in his driveway overnight. The value of cover was $150.
• Sept. 29, 12:24 p.m., 8100-block 120th St.: Complainant stopped a male who left the store after being observed taking meat, cheese and produce without paying. He fled on foot through the parking lot and all items were recovered. Total value $124.
• Sept. 29, 8:08 p.m., 9500-block Highway 17: Delta police received a report of a potential impaired driver. Complainant advised the observed vehicle was unable to keep his lane position and nearly hit a cement barrier. Police located the vehicle and the driver stated he was heading to work. Approved screening device resulted in a zero digital reading and additionally police observed no indication of drug impairment. Police determined he was fit to drive and sent on his way, but cautioned about his driving behaviour.
• Sept. 29, 10:56 p.m., 9200-block 116th St.: Police observed a Honda turn southbound onto 116th Street from 96th Avenue. The vehicle made a wide turn and crossed the double solid centre lane. A traffic stop was conducted to check for sobriety. An open can of beer was observed on the front passenger side floor area. Suspicion was formed and an approved screening device demand was read. Two “warn” results were obtained after multiple failed attempts. Driver was issued an immediate roadside prohibition.
• Oct. 1, 10:14 a.m., 11600-block 77A Ave.: Complainant reported his Jeep Cherokee was stolen overnight while parked on the street in front of his residence. Some unknown tools and various items were inside but nothing of value. Vehicle has since been recovered.
• Oct. 1, 10:31 a.m., 7500-block Highway 17: While conducting laser enforcement, an SUV was observed at a high rate of speed, estimated at 120 km/h. Laser confirmed speed at 125 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. Driver was served an electronic violation ticket for excessive speed in addition to a ticket for failing to display their “N.” A vehicle impoundment was also served and the vehicle was towed.
• Oct. 1, 1:05 p.m., 8500-block 120th St.: Complainant reported a fraud where he gave his SIN number to an unknown male over the phone. The male said he was under investigation and that he was required to provide his SIN. After providing his SIN, he then told the unknown male that he was not providing any further info. As the complainant was not out any money, he was advised to follow up with Services Canada for ways to protect his SIN. He was also advised to not provide any info over the phone to unknown parties.
• Oct. 1, 2:20 p.m., 6700-block Baker Rd.: Complainant called police to report his Ford Edge had been broken into at some point overnight while parked in his parking stall. His business credit card was stolen from his vehicle and used for one transaction at a convenience store and three more subsequent transactions at a gas station. The card has since been cancelled and the credit card company has refunded him.
• Oct. 2, 11:28 a.m., 8400-block 120th St.: Complainant called 911 to report a theft in progress when she observed a male exiting from her vehicle with her purse. She called out to drop the purse and the unknown male did so and ran off toward 120th Street. The purse was recovered and no damage was done to her vehicle, which was believed to have been left unlocked.
• Oct. 2, 10:24 p.m., 8200-bock 119A St.: Report received that a male smashed the front passenger side window of a vehicle which was parked on the street. Complainant exited his residence and gave chase. Upon police attendance, it was further discovered that two other vehicles parked nearby had suffered damage.
• Oct. 3, 7:18 a.m., 11400-block 74A Ave.: Delta police attended a report of theft from vehicle while parked in front of his residence overnight. No damage observed to the vehicle and entry likely via an unlocked driver side door due to faulty key fob. A DeWalt brand drill and kit were taken. Value of drill approximately $500.
• Oct. 3, 8:33 p.m,. 7700-block Wansford Dr.: Complainant called police to report a break-and-enter to his residence. Upon returning home, the front door was ajar and the sliding patio door to his kitchen open. Cash and jewellery were stolen from the bedrooms with drawers and cabinets were rummaged through.
• Oct. 4, 11:10 a.m., 11800-block 79th Ave.: Complainant reported that two to three weeks prior someone had applied for store credit cards in his name. He was notified before the cards were sent so he cancelled them and put a fraud alert on his account. Complainant never lost his ID and is unsure how someone was able to apply for credit cards in his name. Credit card company advised of the forwarding address for the cards and when police attended the address, it was a residence under construction with no occupants. Police recommended complainant contact Equifax to prevent further fraud attempts.
• Oct. 4, 12:38 p.m., 600-block Derwent Way: Business owner called to report a break-and-enter to a container in the rear compound of his business. Suspects likely jumped the gate and walked in on foot. The container lock was breached with bolt cutters and catalytic converters and various tools with an approximate value of $5,000 were taken.
• Oct. 5, 7:05 p.m., 1100-block Derwent Way: Complainant reported the theft of a company vehicle that was taken while parked on the street in front of business. No valuables were in the truck, it was locked, had no alarm, the keys were with owner and it was full of fuel. Vehicle has since been recovered.
