Northwest transit service could come soon

A proposal came before city council last night for passenger service connecting Terrace and Stewart

A NEW passenger service connecting Stewart to Terrace could open soon if an application to the provincial government’s Passenger Transportation Board is approved.

Last night, JJMAC Ventures ticked one approval box off its list after Terrace’s city council unanimously added its support for Jason Levesque to operate between the District of Stewart and the City of Terrace.

As the application to the passenger transportation board requires giving municipalities the opportunity to comment, council has agreed to add its endorsement.

The service would be Stewart-based, beginning with two vehicles to transport passengers between there and the Northwest Regional Airport here.

“There could be some limited service within the city such as picking up clients from the hospital and taking them to other stops within the city before heading back to Stewart,” said a staff report to council about the business plan.

Each driver would submit to a criminal records search, said the report.

“I am in favour of the motion because we have had certain problems with the Highway of Tears,” said councillor Marylin Davies of calls for more transit options connecting northwestern municipalities.

“So I think that this would be a very positive contribution,” said Davies.
