Nuxalk Nation members will head to the polls this spring. As required by the federal Indian Act, elections for Chief and Council must be held every two years and are set for Sunday, March 17.
There are four candidates running for the position of Chief: incumbent Wally Webber, John Schooner, Sam Schooner, and Terry Webber.
There are 25 candidates running for 12 positions on Council and they are: Jeromy Andy, Fiona Edgar, Marshall Hans, Randi Hilland, Blair Mack, James Mack Sr., Loren Mack, Mary Mack, Zoe Mack, Ken Morton, Rhonda Morton, Chantelle Saunders, Carl Schooner, Jamie Schooner, Sam Schooner, Iris Siwallace, Russel Siwallace, Lisa Tallio, Jerry Tallio, Crystal Tallio, Donna Tallio, Kirsten Tallio, Thomas Tallio, Foster Walkus and Terry Webber.
This is almost half as many candidates running for both offices as last election: in the 2017 election there were eight candidates running for Chief and 43 running for Council.
Webber, who was first elected in 2013, took the win last election for his third term. If elected once more, this would be an unprecedented fourth term in leadership.
