Oak Bay Council is looking for a few good residents for volunteer positions on several municipal boards and communities.
Appointments are typically for terms of one or two years and may be renewed for additional terms.
Advisory Design Panel – The panel serves as an advisory body to council to review and make recommendations on the design merits of select development proposals and to assist staff in establishing guidelines to ensure the form and character of future development is of a high quality that meets the needs of the district. The panel also adjudicates the Allan Cassidy Recognition of Renovation and Achievement Awards.
Council invites community members with experience and/or demonstrated qualifications in architecture, engineering, gardening, landscape design, heritage or the visual arts to submit expressions of interest.
Heritage Commission – The commission promotes Oak Bay’s architectural and cultural heritage and is responsible for creating and maintaining inventories of properties of heritage significance, as well as making recommendations with respect to the content of the Community Heritage Register. Commission members may also serve on the Heritage Foundation.
Heritage Foundation – The foundation seeks those interested in serving as volunteer directors. It works to promote the preservation, maintenance and restoration of Oak Bay buildings, structures and land designated as municipal heritage sites, or added to the Community Heritage Register. As a registered society, the foundation raises and disburses funds in this regard.
Those with an interest in architecture, heritage buildings or a good appreciation of heritage matters are encouraged to apply.
Oak Bay Tourism Committee – The committee works to develop projects and programs related to tourism marketing within the municipality. Qualifications include experience with finance, accounting and/or marketing.
Parks and Recreation Commission – The commission oversees Oak Bay recreation programs and parks, and provides policy direction to a professional management staff. A demonstrated interest in community service, plus an appreciation of the financial and operational complexities of parks and recreation management would be desirable.
As “culture” is expected to be added to the commission’s mandate by January 2016, those with an interest or background in cultural activities will also be considered.
Wall of Fame Selection Committee – The committee will select individuals to be recognized for the Wall of Fame Community Recognition Initiative, a way to honour individuals who have been instrumental in the development of Oak Bay’s parks, facilities and programs, and who have exercised extraordinary commitment and voluntary service to the community.
