Community concerns about fireworks planned to set off at Mary Tod Island are allayed after council heard more about the prospect.
The Oak Bay Tea Party plans to celebrate 55 years with fireworks this June and sought some special compensation from Oak Bay, which waived the costs associated with permits.
Coun. Michelle Kirby noted she had no issue supporting that but wary of fireworks stationed on Mary Tod.
“I have concerns and have heard concerns from the community on that vantage point and wondered if other sites had been considered,” Kirby said.
Mayor Nils Jensen admitted during the 2006 centennial celebrations fireworks, but heard later it was a good environmental accident. Those set off in 2012 had no incident.
Oak Bay Fire Chief Dave Cockle also noted the fire department would water down the area ahead of the event and have firefighting capabilities on the Island at the ready.
The Oak Bay Tea Party is June 3 and 4 at Willows Beach Park with amusement rides set up Friday through Sunday. The parade runs through town Saturday with the opening ceremonies following at 12:30 at Willows. Visit oakbayteaparty.com for the entire lineup of entertainment.
