Oak Bay’s Tweed magazine named best in Canada

Oak Bay News is taking the lead with another prestigious award announced this week

It’s an award-filled season for Black Press and the Oak Bay News is taking the lead with another prestigious award announced this week.

Tweed magazine was announced as the best magazine in the country in its circulation class in Newspapers Canada’s 2013 Great Idea Awards.

“This is very exciting for us,” said publisher Penny Sakamoto. “We’ve been working on this idea of a magazine dedicated to the unique and eclectic community of Oak Bay for a long time. This is great validation of the top quality writing and photography that make up the publication.”

The award-winning entries are chosen for demonstrating the most creative and innovative examples of newspaper marketing and promotion from daily and community publications across the country. From imaginative special sections to innovative cross-platform campaigns, the awards showcase a variety of creative initiatives in community news.

Published by Oak Bay News’ owner Black Press, Tweed was officially unveiled by Sakamoto and Director, Advertising Sales Oliver Sommer at a gala event held in the Oak Bay Beach Hotel’s David Foster Theatre in December.

“We’re very proud the community and advertisers have embraced Tweed” said Sommer. “It’s fun to be rewarded for creating something so original and exciting.”

Monday Magazine placed first in the Promotional Campaign category for the M Awards campaign and the Goldstream News Gazette placed second in print advertising with an ad for Vis a Vis.

On the editorial side, the Oak Bay News won second place for news story for its coverage of the Bowker Avenue flood last November.

The Oak Bay News is also a finalist (in the top three) for five awards in the BCYCNA Ma Murray awards.

Along with a prestigious nomination for overall Newspaper Excellence, Oak Bay News’ launch of Tweed magazine netted two awards for Newspaper Promotion and Special Publication. Editor Laura Lavin and her team are also nominated in the Special Section category for “A Day in the Life of Oak Bay,” while the advertising design team picked up a nod for Ad Design for Vis a Vis.

The 2013 British Columbia Yukon Community Newspaper Association awards will be handed out at the Ma Murray Awards Gala on April 20 at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond and the Newspapers Canada award winners will be recognized during the Great Idea Awards on May 2 as part of the Ink+Beyond conference at the Westin Hotel in Ottawa.
