An off-leash dog park is coming to Comox.
In the Strategic Priorities Report at Comox council’s Feb. 10 strategic planning committee meeting, an update was provided for the creation of the park, which has been on their radar for some time.
In Jan. 2019, council approved allocating up to $20,000 for a public consultation process regarding the feasibility of a dog park within the town.
At the time, then-superintendent of parks Al Fraser examined costs, core infrastructure, amenities, size, location and other factors. He said staff has a close look at every park within the town’s jurisdiction and determined two locations – the Northeast Woods and Village Park (Comox Community Centre).

The town is now looking at the leash-optional areas: a fenced area plus a larger trailed area, and is meeting with the K’ómoks First Nation in order to discuss using a portion of the Northeast Woods. This project has been deferred to later in 2021, however, a letter was sent to School District 71 (Comox Valley) for use of a portion of the grounds at Comox Elementary School in Nov. 2020 for an interim off-leash park.
In the report, it noted SD71 has approved the request, and staff is working with the district on implementation.
The district currently has a building application in for a portable at 2030 Wallace Ave. and will co-ordinate both projects, with a construction timeframe in early spring with the goal to have it operational by summer 2021.
